Enable Multi-Touch Gesture (Finger Scroll, Momentum and ChiralMotion) on Synaptics TouchPad in Windows 7/Vista/XP/Server

Multi-touch or multitouch functionality has been attracting consumer attraction, thanks to iPhone and iPod Touch, two-finger-scroll in Apple MacBook with TrackPad, and Windows 7, which has built-in multi-touch mapping application, photo viewing program, and gesture support in Internet Explorer 8. Multi-touch is essentially a set of interaction techniques which allow computer users to interact and control graphical applications with fingers.

While normally multi-touch is best performed on touch screen that recognizes multiple simultaneous touch points, the touchpad on laptop and notebook computer does potentially able to be used for multitouch gesture too. Synaptics TouchPad is one such pointing device that supports multi-touch. Most of the Synaptics TouchPad hardware devices do support multi-touch, which is implemented at software driver level as Synaptics Gestures. In fact, Synaptics had a commercial video titled “Things You Can Do With a Gesture” to promote new notebooks with Synaptics Gestures.

The Synaptics Gesture Suite device driver is now equipped with Scrybe Gesture Workflow Technology – the next generation in TouchPad-based PC interfaces. 5 Android browser alternatives

Looking for the best web experience on your Android device? We look at some of the Android browsers available.

This year's big thing is Android. Google's mobile operating system is popping up everywhere, from mobile phones to tablet PCs. One of the key features of having an Android device is that you can browse the web while you're out of the office or away from home.
The default browsing tools on Android are decent enough but what if you want more? We look at some of the browser alternatives available for Android.

Firefox 4
Mozilla's Firefox 4 browser has to top the list of alternatives. The browser, which is now in beta release, has a completely different look and feel to its desktop sibling but retains much of the underlying architecture that makes the desktop version so popular. Firefox 4 includes Sync, so that your desktop and mobile browsing is always in sync, and also has the underlying add-ons architecture in place. It's the potential of add-ons that makes Firefox so compelling. If you're used to Firefox on your desktop PC then why not have the same add-ons available to you on your Android device? The interface for Firefox is clean and the sliding sidebars for add-ons, bookmarks and preferences are a nice touch.

Opera Mini
Another likely option is Opera Mini. Although Opera doesn't have a huge market share, those that do use the Opera browser swear by it. Opera Mini is fast, thanks to its compression technology. Opera also has its own synchronization tools in Opera Link which means your desktop and mobile browsers are always in sync with one another. Add to that Opera Mini's tabbed interface and speed dial for accessing your favourite sites quickly and you have a great little browser. Opera's long-click technology also allows you to easily open links in new tabs or copy text or various other features.

Skyfire
Skyfire's latest release, version 3.0, is well worth a look, particularly if you're into social networking. Skyfire has deeply integrated Facebook into the browser so that you can quickly share items from the web with friends, or even browse a list of links that Facebook friends have posted to their feed. You can also view a list of popular Facebook pages directly from the toolbar. If you're not into Facebook, Skyfire's other offering is optimised video playing. Skyfire can play Flash video in the browser and optimises these for smaller interfaces so they are easier to view and consume less bandwidth.

XScope
XScope is intriguing. Its interface looks a lot like Google's Chrome browser with the tabs along the top. By tapping on the zoom button next to the URL bar you can hide Android's top menubar to maximise the space available to the browser. Similarly, swiping across the screen switches between tabs which is very smooth. XScope also has its own single-finger zoom feature which makes it possible to quickly zoom in and out of a web page. Although very streamlined, XScope's settings window offers extensive customisation options. Everything from themes to how and where new tabs open can be controlled through this interface.

Dolphin HD and Mini
The Dolphin browser is one of the best browsers for Android. If you're running an earlier version of Android (version 1.6) then the Mini version is for you. The HD version works on Android 2+. Either of these are worth taking a look at. Proper tabbed browsing and a gesture-based input system for bookmarking and opening URLs and other actions makes Dolphin a great addition to Android. The HD version works a lot like Firefox's browser with bookmarks and settings options popping out the side of the window. There are also tons of add-ons for Dolphin HD which makes it pretty powerful.

There are many other browsers available for Android but these five are among the best. If you're looking for desktop and mobile synchronisation then Firefox and Opera Mini are the best options. For a streamlined and attractive approach XScope and Dolphin Mini are the obvious choices. Which leaves Dolphin HD as the power-user option and Skyfire as the ideal social networking browser.

Tsunami hits Japan - Massive 8.9-magnitude quake

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive wave filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward land.
The number of fatalities was unclear, but Japan's Kyodo news reported at least 10 killed and numerous injured.

The quake prompted at least 19 countries and numerous Pacific islands to issue tsunami warnings. It was followed by powerful aftershocks that were felt in capital of Tokyo.

The quake's epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there continued to feel aftershocks long after the quake

The world map of social networks

The world map of social network below was designed by RiaNovosti. What captured your attention? Besides Facebook’s 600 million strong users, many are probably curious what Qzone is. Here’s the answer: Qzone is a social networking site formed by Chinese Internet giant, Tencent. It isn’t clear how the 480 million figure came about but from what I understand, there are more than 600 million QQ instant-messaging users. The 600 million user base was reported by Tencent about 6 months ago. It’s probably more now.

Using the same QQ account, users are able to log on to Qzone too. Tencent’s system is similar to Google’s whereby one account can lead a user to plenty of services such as music, email, games and ecommerce. With that in mind, 480 million user base for Qzone seems fair and attainable.

Cultural shock

From my understanding culture shock is very natural occurrence when traveling to a completely new culture or new environment. Culture shock expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate (Piet-Pelon & Hornby, 1992, p.2). The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new environment and Barna (1976) also emphasised there is no fixed symptoms of culture shock, because every person is affected differently.

We can describe culture shock as the physical and emotional discomfort one suffers when coming to live in another country or a place different from the place of origin. Often, the way that we lived before is not accepted as or considered as normal in the new place. Everything is different, for example, not speaking the language, not knowing how to use banking machines, not knowing how to use the telephone and so forth.

According to the U-curve of cultural adjustment (Rogers & Steinfatt, 1998/1999, p 214), culture shock has many phases. Each phase can be on-going or appear only at certain times. The first phase is the introductory phase. In this first stage, before you go away from old environment to new environment. Next is second phase. In this phase, the new arrival may feel euphoric and be pleased by all of the new things encountered. This time is called the "honey-moon" phase, as everything encountered is new and exciting. For instance, the first time I saw snow here, in Sweden I was very excited. On the last week of November, it had been raining all night. I could hear the sound of water pouring heavily on the roof. The heater at my home didn’t work well so I had to cover myself with 4 layers of blankets. When I woke up, the ground was all white covered with snow. I got up and went outside, my friends and I, to take some pictures in the snow and post those pictures on Facebook and set album name called “Culture shock!.” Then I went outside my house and I saw one guy that we didn't even know threw snowballs at us. So then my friends and I started throwing snowballs back at him. The first few days of snow make me and my Thai friends very excited about snow fall.
Then, the third stage presents itself (stress/shock phase). A person may encounter some difficult times and crises in daily life. For example, after I and my Thai friends enjoyed the snow in "honey-moon" phase we realized the difficulties because of snow fall. We usually go to University by our car but when snow fall the ice covered our car especially windows and windshields. We also had problem with frozen locks, we can’t open the door. But the worst thing was getting stuck in winter ice and snow happens to most of us eventually. Other example is communication difficulties may occur such as not being understood. In this stage, there may be feelings of discontent, impatience, anger, sadness, and feeling incompetence. This happens when a person is trying to adapt to a new culture that is very different from the culture of origin. Transition between the old methods and those of the new country is a difficult process and takes time to complete. During the transition, there can be strong feelings of dissatisfaction.

The fourth phase is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. A new feeling of pleasure and sense of humor may be experienced. We may start to feel a certain psychological balance. The new arrival may not feel as lost and starts to have a feeling of direction. A person is more familiar with the environment and wants to belong. This initiates an evaluation of the old ways versus those of the new.
In the fifth phase, the person realizes that the new culture has good and bad things to offer. This stage can be one of double integration or triple integration depending on the number of cultures that the person has to process. This integration is accompanied by a more solid feeling of belonging. The person starts to define him/herself and establish goals for living.

The sixth phase is the phase that is called the "re-entry shock" or "own culture shock" (Woesler, 2009). This occurs when a return to the country of origin is made. One may find that things are no longer the same. This results from the psychosomatic and psychological consequences of the readjustment process to the primary culture (Huff, 2001). For example, some of the newly acquired customs are not in use in the old culture.
These phases are present at different times and each person has their own way of reacting in the phases of culture shock. As a consequence, some phases will be longer and more difficult than others. Many factors contribute to the duration and effects of culture shock (Christofi, Victoria, and Charles, 2007).

I realized that the symptoms of cultural shock can appear at different times. We can experience real pain from culture shock. It is a great opportunity for leaning and accepting new perspectives. Culture shock can make one develop a better understanding of oneself and stimulate personal creativity.

Categorizing and Stereotypes

The stereotype’s definition of intercultural communication book is ‘a generalization about some group of people that oversimplifies their culture. Many stereotypes are completely incorrect and others greatly distort reality.’(Rogers & Steinfatt 1999, p. 228) In my understanding, the stereotype means positive or negative presumption towards groups or other nationalities because of prejudicing and categorizing. For example, most people think that all Chinese eat dogs. According to Gordon Allport (1954/1979) cited ‘that prejudiced individuals often think in stereotypes. Some groups of people oversimplify reality lead to prejudice’. Therefore to overcome stereotype, people who have intercultural competent should judges each individual on a person-to-person basis, rather than categorizing people into stereotypes. (Rogers & Steinfatt 1999)

In fact, people will not know individual unless they contact each others. From my own experience in group working, I also prejudge all Germans that they like argument because I listened to other people that German students always saw thing in different way. They always asked and shared their opinions in class because it is their learning and teaching style in their home university in Germany. However, I had a chance to discuss with two German teammates during the group process evaluation. One of them said that students had only two group assignments per one semester in their home university in Germany. This means that they familiar with individual work rather than group work. Moreover, they would ask any questions after class rather than in class. The other German teammate told me that he though giving negative feedback to each other among the meeting is not good. This is because the one who got the negative feedback would lose his/ her face. It means that they do not like conflicts. I have learned many things about stereotypes and categorizing from my group work. However, knowledge about how to overcome categorizing and stereotypes is very important. This is because ‘many stereotypes are completely incorrect and others greatly distort reality. Therefore the stereotype may have prevented you from ever getting to know the other individual.’ (Rogers & Steinfatt 1999, p.228)
